On the afternoon of January 16, 2009, the angel of silence entered into the room at Calvert County Nursing Center, and call Mother Addie Mae Watts Weems home to her final resting place after a lengthy illness. Mother Addie was the daughter of the late John Watts and Mary Hester Johnson. She was one of twelve (12) children: Leon (deceased), Marylene (deceased), Viola, William, Lillian (deceased), Charles (deceased), Minnie (deceased), John Edward (deceased), James Robert (deceased), Irene (deceased), and Della.
Miss Addie as she was affectionately known was born on March 7, 1919 in Calvert County , Maryland. She was a domestic worker for over 40 years. She enjoyed preparing scrumptious meals, baking her famous lemon meringue pies and making her homemade sweet ice tea. Birthdays and holidays were very special to her because she had her family members around to celebrate. She had a green thumb with lots of plants and flowers inside and outside of her home. She love stitching by hand and most of all raking up leaves in her yard during the fall.
Mother Addie was united in Holy matrimony on January 9, 1937 to the late Maurice Wilson Weems, Sr. From this union six children were born.
She was a faithful member of St. Johns United Methodist Church before her illness. Mother Addie enjoyed being a servant of the Lord in many ministries such as the United Methodist Women Society, Communion Stewart, Commission on Worship, Commission on Evangelism, Testimony Class, Senior Choir, and Prayer Services. Most of all she enjoyed singing Gods praises and one of her favorite hymns was Jesus on the Main Line. While in the Nursing Center, she would burst out singing I Dont Believe Hes Brought Me This Far.
Mother Addie was preceded in death by her late husband, Maurice Wilson Weems, Sr., two sons, Maurice Weems, Jr. and William Edward Weems, Sr., one daughter Ruth Mae McCrae, one granddaughter, Erica Weems, two brothers- in -law, Paul White and Will Jones and one sister-in-law, Geraldine Johnson.
She leaves to cherish two devoted daughters: Alice Nellie Gross, Stamford, CT and Betty Gorman (Genious, Sr.), Chesapeake Beach, MD, one son, Irvin Weems, Hyattsville, MD. Eleven grandchildren: Melvenna Thompson (Ernest), Genious Gorman, Jr., Koren Brown (Tyrone), Alicia Gross, Alison Weems, April Weems, William (Bucky) Weems, Jr. (Beatrice), Rochelle Weems, Katina Weems, Jonathan (Johnny) Weems, and her adopted granddaughter, Kasinda (Cindy) Hutchins. Fourteen great grandchildren: Marshay Gorman, Charnita Gorman, Ashlee Leach, Amber Weems, Maurell Cook, III, Ernest Thompson, III (EJ), Brittany Brown, Tiffany Brown, Jasmine Weems, Nyia Weems, Courtney Gray, Jalaysia Weems, Jonathan II and Jada Weems. Five Great-Great Grandchildren: Shayla Gorman, Ashlee Gorman, Honesty Gorman, Marshay Gorman, Jr. and Elijah Hawkins. Two Sisters: Viola White and Della Johnson , One Brother, William (Joe) Johnson. One son-in law, Genious Gorman, Sr. One daughter-in-law, Ruth-Alice Weems. Two sisters-in-law: Rachel and Marion Johnson. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. There were several special people who were very dear to her heart: niece-Constance (Connie) Johnson, neighbors, Annie Mae Mason, Cliff and Diane Johnson, Clarence and Shirley Mackall, Mabel Dowell and a dear friend, Christine Long.
