Charles McFarland was the son of two Irish immigrants, Patrick and Anna (Hyland) McFarland. He was born in 1874 and served in the US Navy. Charles married Mary Francis Hoy on 6 May 1896. One year later she gave birth to a son, Donald Arnold McFarland, who, like his father and grandfather, served in the US Navy.
