Elaine was married to James Hofer on July 21, 1948. To this marriage five children were born.
The farm they were renting near Lakota, ND was sold so they moved to Larimore where they lived and worked until July 1962. At that time, they purchased a business called the Johnson Store in Hope, ND. They worked side by side in the store until 1982, at which time they sold the store to their business partner, Mic McCullough. After moving to Fargo, Elaine worked for the Ben Franklin store and later Swanson Health Products until her retirement in 1995. James died on July 13, 1998 and Elaine continued to live in Fargo until entering Sanford Hillsboro Care Center in June 2017.
Elaine is survived by her sons Michael (Karen) Hofer, Fargo; Jon (Sharon) Hofer, Tucson, AZ; Rick (Lori) Hofer, Mesa, AZ; daughter Deborah (Tim) Johnson, Hope, ND; son-on-law, Mark Salander, Hope; brother Byron Tupa, Larimore, ND; sister Geraldine D'Amico (Joe), Papillion, NE; 15 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, John and Gladys Tupa, husband, James Hofer, daughter, Sandra (Hofer) Salander; sisters, Nona (Tupa) Hurdelbrink; Jane (Tupa) Ostlie; brother Lon Tupa and infant great grandson, Dalton Carlson.
Visitation will be 9:00-11:00 am on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at St Agatha Catholic Church, Hope, ND with funeral mass at 11:00. Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery.
Sincere and heartfelt gratitude goes to the staff on second floor at the Sanford Hillsboro Care Center for the exceptional care provided to Elaine since 2017, especially during this past year! In spite of the pandemic often preventing personal visits from her family, very devoted and loving staff members made sure to give lots of time, attention, care and understanding to our mother! What a difference you made in her life!
