Before our mother was Joan Grace Griffin, she was Joan Grace Love, born in Merced, California to Boyd Marion Love and Kathryn French (Harvey) Love. She was raised in Merced where she loved to assist her veterinarian grandfather on his rounds, thus inspiring her love of animals.

When in high school, she met and fell in love with Michael Jerome Griffin, a tall, lean cowboy. They were wed in 1949 and began raising four daughters; first in Merced, then in Ventura and later Linden, California. She was happy shuttling her girls, and their friends, to their many school and 4-H events, spending countless hours behind the wheel. We recall that she had to sit on a pillow so that she could reach the steering wheel, gas pedal, and brakes – important to her go and whoa.

Joan Grace Love Griffin... her name suited her so. With grace and love she approached every situation. With grace and love, she patiently taught her girls to make the best apple pie and gravy. With grace and love, she inspired a passion for reading and imagination in all four of her granddaughters. With grace and love, she relished gardening and delighted in bird watching. With grace and love she took in the strays and nursed them back to health.

With grace and love she cherished her daughters: Kathryn Elizabeth Hamilton, Lori Ann Blackburn, the late Sallie Lynn Griffin, and Michelle Annette Griffin. With grace and love she devoutly cared for her four granddaughters, Megan Hamilton, Dianna Brown, Mallory Hamilton Kelley, and Kendra Brown. With grace and love, she welcomed a great grandchild, Maren Prestia, into the family. With grace and love she valued her sons-in-law Randy Hamilton and Charlie Blackburn and grandson-in-law Dan Kelley. With grace and love she treasured her sister Sallie (Jack) Bardini, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. With grace and love, she kissed Poppy/Dad/Mike goodbye every day. With grace and love, she left us. And while we can no longer squeeze her delicate hand or see her easy, beautiful smile, we can carry her within and keep her spirit moving in our lives, with grace and love.
