Schuyler W. Alverson age 91 died at his home on the river in Rensselaer Falls, NY early Sunday morning April 19. 2015. Calling hours will be held on Thursday (April 23, 2015) from 2-4 & 6-8pm followed by the funeral service on Friday at 1:00pm at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home.He was born October 3, 1923 in Syracuse, NY the son of G Carl and Irene (Jenkins) Alverson. Although he lived in other places, his heart was at the Pines in Rensselaer Falls.Schuyler served in the 10th Mountain Division during World War II and was wounded in Poe Valley, Italy. He graduated from Clarkson College and early in his career he co-owned Winters Dairy in Potsdam. He loved to teach and was a respected science teacher at Edwards and St. Lawrence Central Schools where he particularly enjoyed outing clubs and class trips (NYC, England and Scotland) with his students. In the 1960’s he was a Civil Defense instructor. During retirement years, he and his wife Fern enjoyed travelling and spending winters in the southwest. Special times were spent with family and friends at Campobello Island in New Brunswick.Schuyler was a passionate rock and mineral collector. He spent many hours with his friends Bob Dow and George Robinson combing the St. Lawrence County hills for mineral treasures. His collection of St. Law. Co. minerals is showcased at the NYS Museum in Albany. Schuyler was a founding member of the St. Lawrence Co. Rock and Mineral Club and an active member for 50 years. He was active in the Rensselaer Falls Historical Society and the local cemetery board.He was predeceased by his parents; a sister Eleanor Wait; a brother G Carl Alverson, Jr. and step-daughter Dena Rapoport.Schuyler is survived by his wife Fern, his daughter Linda Alverson and her husband George McPherson, his son Curtis Alverson and his daughter Jessica Bell, his daughter Anne Weaver, her husband William, and their children Aaron, Nathaniel and Elisabeth; his step son Peter Bloss and his wife Sandra and their son Michael. Fern’s granddaughters Amy and Beth Rapoport and 9 great-grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered by nieces and nephews and the many friends he and Fern met on their travels. His family will miss his humor, and unfailing love and support.Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley or the Rensselaer Falls Fire Dept.
