Dr. Babcock was a friend of Benjamin Franklin's, served as Rhode Island's first postmaster, helped found Brown University and built the Babcock-Smith House in Westerly. He served as a General in the American Revolution.

Joshua married ''Hannah Stanton in'' 1735. They had children:
Henry - Luke - Adam - Hannah - Frances - Paul - Amelia - Sally - Harriet

Hannah died in 1778.
