AN OLD-TIMER GONE.
Death In Calistoga of James Adams, Who Was Once Sheriff.
Information was received yesterday of the death of James Adams, an old and well known resident of the State and city, at Calistoga, on Tuesday. Adams, who was a native of Ireland, aged fifty-eight years, will be remembered by many old San Franciscans as having been Sheriff of this city and county from 1872 to 1874. having been elected on the Republican ticket to succeed Henry L. Davis in office. In 1871 Adams was the Supervisor: from the Tenth Ward. He was at the time of his death possessed of considerable means, the property on the northeast corner of Sutter ana-Kearny streets forming a part of his estate. One of the notable events of Adams' term as Sheriff was the escape and recapture of the convicted iorgers, the Brotherton brothers, who, having procured weapons through a " trusty," compelled the jailer, a Deputy named Franklin, to open the doors of the ' County Jail.
The funeral will take place from Adams' residence, on the corner of Tenth and Filbert streets, Oakland, the date to be hereafter announced
