James E. "Jim" Barkow, 70, a longtime Newberry area resident and teacher, died at University Hospital - Madison, WI. on Thursday, May 8, 2008.

Born on April 19, 1938 in Marquette, he was a son of the late Gust Edward & Ingrid (Hokkanen) Barkow. Jim graduated from Graveraet High School class of 1956, and Northern Michigan University in 1964 with a Bachelor's degree in Education. Jim worked for a short time in the Detroit Public School system and then came to Newberry. Jim was an Industrial Arts & Drafting Teacher at Tahquamenon Area Schools for 25 years retiring in 1993. In the summer months Jim taught driver education. Jim was a member of the Newberry Elks Club B.P.O.E. #1705, a member of the Supervisory Committee of the Tahquamenon Area Credit Union Board of Directors for many years, and was a member of the Tahquamenon Area Retired School Personnel Association. Jim was an avid outdoorsman. He was especially fond of hunting, fishing and blueberry picking. He enjoyed reading, working jigsaw puzzles, doing Sudoku Puzzles in ink, travelling, and being with both his Newberry friends and his lake friends.

Surviving are his wife Mary, whom he married on December 14, 1974 of Newberry and step-children: Sharon (John Fishback) Brown of Newberry, Kate Rosier of Mt. Pleasant, and Jay (Lori) Brown of Freeland. Also surviving are step-grandchildren: Jessica (Brandon) Price, Sarah Brown-McNeal, Mary Schwarz, Paige & Janna Brown, Glen Parker, Jazcinda & Ian (Clara) Fishback, a niece Chris Hill and nephew Charles Barkow. Preceding Jim in death are his parents and his brother David.

Friends may gather to celebrate Jim's life at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. A short prayer will conclude the celebration offered by Rev. Cheri Ford of the All Saints Episcopal Church of Newberry. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

The family suggest memorials may be offered to the Tahquamenon Education Foundation in memory Jim Barkow.
