He was also the vice-president and from 1956 to 1969 the executive vice-president of the Crown Zellerbach Corporation. He is especially remembered in San Francisco as a civic leader and patron of the arts, for over 25 years the chairman of the city's Arts Commission. He died aboard the cruise ship Mariposa while docked in Honolulu, Hawaii.
