Second of seven children & the oldest daughter of the Reverend William Telfer McArthur & Georgina (or Georgianna) née Welstead.

Her father, born 18 June 1861 in Cherry Valley (or Sterling Valley) NY, was the youngest of the five (known) children born to Robert McArthur & Ann Ironside, both of Scotland. His family headed west into Canada, settling in Galt, Ontario. William married in Stamford, Ontario on June 25th, 1884 to Georgina Welstead, daughter of Alfred & Margaret (née unknown) Welstead, who was born c. 1856/57 in Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario.

At the time of their union William Telfer McArthur (later changed to MacArthur) was a farmer but he gave that up when he found religion. He became an itinerant Baptist preacher who underwent many evangelical trainings and kept their large family on the move. Marguerite’s older brother, Alfred (1885+P-1967), was born in Canada while Marguerite just two years later was born in New York. Her brother Lawrence/Laurence Tefler MacArthur (1891-1960), three years younger, was also born in New York (Rochester) but her brother Roderick (born 1892) was born in Pennsylvania, as were her three youngest siblings: Helen (1894-1974) (who married Edward Wayt Bishop), Charles Gordon MacArthur (1895-1956) (who married the actress Helen Hayes & was himself a successful playwright & screenwriter) and John Donald MacArthur (1897-1978) (who was extremely successful in Florida real estate & owned a major insurance company). A tragedy struck the family on October 11th of 1897 when Marguerite’s five year old brother Roderick was accidentally shot by ten year old brother Alfred. The family moved from Dunmore, Lackawanna Co., PA to Chicago, IL in the early 1900’s and from there they branched out. Her parents were living in Nyack, NY when her mother died on 15 Feb 1915 in Manhattan, NY. She’s buried in the Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St Catharines, Ontario where other Welstead family members are interred. Her father outlived her by 34 years and died on 10 Nov 1949. He’s buried in the McArthur plot of the Mount View Cemetery in Galt, Ontario

The successes of Marguerite & her siblings was a stark contrast to their childhood. Raised in poverty, their father stern, their mother resourceful, constantly moving, they nonetheless rose above their humble upbringing.

Marguerite married in Chicago on October 25th, 1911 to Berton Lester Wiley, son of George Washington Wiley (1864-1915) & Nettie née Banks (1870-1960). Born Elbertus Lester Wiley, he usually went by Berton or Bert. The couple first lived in Kansas where their daughter Lois was born in 1913 but were already living in Iowa by 1915 when their son George William Wiley was born. They raised their children in Des Moines, IA and moved to St Charles in 1935.

Marguerite & Bert’s marriage ended in divorce. Bert remarried sometime prior to 1940 & is listed on that year’s census for Maple Park, Kane Co., IL with a new wife, Ethel, a Danish immigrant born in 1897.
