Prussian Royalty. He served as reigning Grand Duke of Oldenburg from 1853 until his death. Born Nikolaus Friedrich Peter, he was the only son of Augustus, Grand Duke of Oldenburg by his second wife Princess Ida of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym. On February 10, 1852, he married Princess Elisabeth of Saxe-Altenburg, the fourth daughter of Joseph, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg and Amelia of Württemberg. There were two children born of this union, Frederick Augustus (1852) and George (1855). He suffered from heart problems in his later life and he died as a result at the age of 72. His title then passed to his oldest son.
