He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army with the 70th Infantry Division Trail Blazers during WWII. After his discharge in 1945, the couple lived in South Dakota, where he farmed until they moved to Lebanon in 1954. Upon coming to Lebanon he began working for Champion International Playwood, where he worked for 25 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of American Legion Post #51 and the Wigwam Wiseman. He was an avid sportsman. He loved the Washinton Huskies and the Atlanta Braves. He enjoyed family activities including hunting, fishing, bowling, camping and watching his grandchildren play sports.
