Ellen was the daughter of John White and unknown mother. Born 20 Dec 1858, in Elmira, Chemung County, New York, her obituary states that she was a life long resident of Elmira. Ellen's parents were both Irish immigrants per census data. Ellen had three known siblings; a sister Margaret (married Millard H. West) and brothers Michael and William (William never married or had children). Ellen married Marquis J. Bateman prior to 1877.
They had 7 children:
I. Infant male, born and died 11 April 1877
II. John Joseph 15 June 1878-20 Sep 1921, married Margaret O'Dea 1900
III. James M. 9 Feb 1880-21 Jun 1955
IV. Benjamin Joseph 29 May 1882-4 June 1936
V. Charles Edward 19 July 1884-6 June 1966
VI. Elizabeth E. 7 Dec 1887-30 June 1965, married Henry E. Brown 24 Oct 1906.
VII .Mary M. 13 Aug 1890-2 Aug 1971.
John Joseph and Elizabeth were the only children that married.
All of the children remained in Elmira and are buried in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Ellen's husband Marquis was a Union Army veteran and a shoemaker by trade. Marquis died "suddenly" 23 Nov 1890 and is buried in the civil war section of Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira. Upon Marquis' death, Ellen was awarded a widow's pension "at the rate of eight dollars per month to continue during her widowhood unless she shall forfeit her right thereto (the assumption is that she would lose her pension if she should marry again which she never did). And that she is also entitled to two dollars per month additional for each of the following named children while living and under the age of sixteen years." With the exception of John and Elizabeth, all of her children lived with her even as adults. In 1900 Ellen bought a house at 901 Railroad Ave [ corner of West Washington Ave and what is now Wisner]. The 1910 Elmira business directory shows a business at this address under Confectionery, Fruits, Etc. This business is shown at 901 Railroad Ave 1910-1911 and at 903 Railroad Ave 1914-1920. Ellen then moved to 100 W. Washington (next to 901 Railroad but on Washington) where she remained until her death. Sanborn maps suggest that these 3 addresses were connected or at least shared common walls.
Ellen was a communicant of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, 604 Park Place and one of the early parishioners per Star-Gazette article published 27 Jun 1939. She was an associate member of the Elmira Association for the Blind and contributed to the Red Cross flood relief fund 1937.
In 1939 she was presented a Diamond Jubilee certificate from the Elmira Star-Gazette " The Diamond Jubilee Club is an honorary classification, originating from the publication in The Elmira Star-Gazette, on June 27, 1939, of the names of persons who, living in Elmira or immediate vicinity in 1939, date their residence back to the Charter days of 1864 or beyond."
Ellen died 30 Dec 1939 at her home. Her obituary was published in the Star-Gazette 2 Jan 1940:
"Mrs. Ellen Bateman, a lifelong resident of Elmira and a communicant of St. Patrick's Church, died at 8:40 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 1939, at her home, 100 W. Washington Ave. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Henry Brown and Miss Mary M. Bateman; two sons, James and Charles Bateman; a sister, Mrs. Margaret West, all of Elmira; a brother, William White of Cayuta; two grandsons, J. Earl Bateman and Arthur Brown of Elmira. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 8 a.m. at the family home and at 9 at St. Patrick's Church. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul's Cemetery."
