In 1843 he established the George Armitstead & Co shipping line and jute business at Dundee, Scotland. Other offices held include Justice of the Peace (JP) and of Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Forfarshire and Dundee. He was also invested as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
