Donald Lee "Don" Murray, 68, of Castle Hayne, NC, passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Wilmington, NC, November 29, 1940, son of the late Charles P. Murray, Sr. and Florence Brown Murray.

Don was best known for his gentleness, kindness, his faith in God, and his love for his large extended family. He was predeceased by his brother, William H. Murray, his son, Donald Patrick Murray, and grandson, Christopher P. Murray, his nephew, Chuck Murray, step-parents, Edward and Peggy Raynor, and special aunts, Kitty Taylor Flowers and Marybelle Jordan.

Don was a longtime member of Bethany Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, elder, and choir member, where he will be dearly missed. He graduated from New Hanover High School and attended Wilmington College. He served in the National Guard and the United States Navy for six years. He was an avid golfer and loved to play at Riegelwood Golf Club with his buddies. He also enjoyed volleyball with the Senior Team whom he jokingly called the "Antique Kids." He was also known as quite a dancer along with his wife, Ginny. Don worked with Corning in the maintenance department for thirty-three years, retiring in 2000. He later was employed part-time as a courier with the now First Federal Bank, where he enjoyed all the people with whom he worked. He said they treated him like family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia, "Ginny" Murray; his brother, Col. Charles P. Murray and wife Anne; his loving children, Angelia Murray Pigott, Kenneth H. Murray and wife Deborah "Mimi"; his step-children, to whom he was known lovingly as Popa Don, Lynn Balderson and husband Bill, Cynthia Riggs and husband David, Darry Parker and husband Kevin, Kelly LeHew, and Michael Abshire; sixteen grandchildren, Jessica, Patrick, Travis, Brandon, Blake, Robert, Shauna, Ryan, Amy, Adam, Christiana, Andrew, Tabatha, Tiffany, Alicia, and Alliance; twelve great-grandchildren, Cody, Mia, Sean, Maddison, Jameison, Rebecca, Allison, Lulla, Mikenna, Kalib, Liam, and Alexis; sister-in-law, Gwen and niece Linda Murray; step-sister, Amelia Huggins and husband David; step-brother, David Russell and wife Dean; several cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his baby dog, "Sassy."

An open reception for family and friends will start at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 2237 Castle Hayne Road, Wilmington, NC, 28401, followed by a memorial service and celebration of Don's life starting at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Keith Warner and Chaplain Robert Swart will officiate the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC, 28401, or Bethany Presbyterian Church.
