SYLVIA'S OBITUARY
Our beloved Sylvia Howard Nelson of Huntington passed away peacefully Sunday morning, April 19, 2020 at her home in Huntington.

Sylvia Nelson

HUNTINGTON - Sylvia Howard Nelson, age 80, passed away April 19, 2020 at her home in Huntington in the presence of her loving family after a short fight with cancer.

Sylvia was born in Murray, Utah on December 7, 1939 to Delta (Brown) Howard and Charles Neil Howard of Huntington, Utah.

Sylvia attended Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah and North Emery High School in Huntington where she graduated in 1958. She married Glenn McCoy Nelson on October 17, 1958 and made their home in his home town of Clear Creek, Utah. They moved to her family farm in Huntington, Utah in 1967.

Survived by her husband, Glenn; sister, Nancy (Howard) Espanet; daughters, Shawnee (Rob Cizik) and Sherree (John Gurule’); son Steven (Catherine); granddaughters Shaffryn (Christy), Tiffany (Freddy), Elyse (Sean) and Caitlin; grandsons Gage and Callum; and great-granddaughters Eva and Maggie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Neil Erin Howard and Clarence Neil Howard.

Sylvia worked many places in Emery and Carbon county: Emery Mining Company, Carbon-Emery Bank, Emery County Courthouse, and many retail establishments. However, her “favorite job ever” was at the Emery County Progress where she wrote the column “Bits of History.” Additionally, she was self-employed in her business “Repairing Old Glory” for over twenty years, where she repaired American flags sent to her from across the United States. Most of the flags were from the U.S. Postal Service where she was listed as their only flag repair service nation-wide.

Sylvia enjoyed work but volunteering was her passion. She was pivotal in the formative leadership of Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country and the Emery County Historical Society, serving in many critical positions for decades. Of note, she was the Historical Society’s coordinator for the county history project that led to the publication of the Emery County volume of the Utah Centennial County History Series. She also enjoyed serving with the American Legion Auxiliary supporting veterans and their families and local community patriotic events. For her limitless service, she was awarded the Utah Lt. Governor's Volunteer Recognition Certificate as well as many other service awards. Along with other committed patrons, she also helped establish Alpine Desert Edge Church in Huntington, where she devotedly worshiped, served, and celebrated until her passing.

Sylvia enjoyed bible study, meeting people, and all things Emery County. She also loved the fine arts, travel, crafts, sewing, campfires, reunions, swimming, and sending mail the old fashioned way. She was involved in 4-H, cub scouts, and the county fair. She was the fiber that connected extended family and friends, and was a mom or aunt to anyone who needed one. She was adventurous and fun, loving and kind, thoughtful and grateful, smart and beautiful. Her bedrock strength and faith were unwavering until the end.

On behalf of Sylvia, her family would like to thank B-K’s Stop-n-Shop (Kent Wilson and his wonderful staff), the Bill Ivie family, Alpine Desert Edge Church, Symbii Hospice Care, Mitchell Funeral Home and all her many wonderful friends and neighbors for their love and support; and for her guardian angels Shaffryn and Christy for their unwavering compassion and care.

Funeral service, Thursday, April 23, 2020, 11:00 a.m., at the Alpine-Desert Edge Christian Chapel. Extended viewing hours at the church Wednesday from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Family will receive friends at the church Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to service.
