Enlisted, June 21, 1916, in Troop A, 1st NY Cavalry Regiment, NYNG, Brooklyn, NY. The regiment mustered in for service on the Mexican border June 30, 1916, and was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas, as part of the 6th NY Division ( later to be the 27th Division. He returned to New York with his Troop and mustered out of boarder service, March 20, 1916.

On March 30, 1917, ten days after being mustered out of border service, the 1st Squadron, 1st NY Cavalry ( which Troop A was a part of ), was called up. This time to guard the New York Aqueduct System. When war was declared he was already on duty.

The 1st NY Cavalry Regiment reorganized for the World War as the 104th & 106th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. Troop A was designated Company A, 104th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. The 104th MG Battalion was assigned to Camp Wadsworth, SC, for training. After training at Camp Wadsworth the battalion shipped out for Europe, May 17, 1917, aboard the USS Calamares from Newport News, VA. The USS Calamares docked at St. Nazaire, France on May 30, 1918.

After additional training in France the 27th Division entered the Lines in mid July 1918. He saw combat in both Belgium & France.

He was transferred out of the battalion date and unit unknown. He returned to the States aboard the USS Louisville arriving , January 7 1919 and discharged from the service January 13, 1919.
