Born August 7, 1937 in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of James T. Small, Sr. and Philomena V. (Burns) Small. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert D. Small, on April 8, 1949; his father, James T. Small Sr. on April 8, 1979; and his mother, Philomena V. (Burns) Small, August 10, 1999.
Dr. Small is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth A. Polacheck, M.D., and husband, Lee, of Waukesha, WI; a son, Brian R. Small, and wife, Amber, of Poynette, WI; and five grandchildren, Katie and Claire Polacheck; Sydney, Carsten and Morgan Small.
A member of St. Peter’s Church, Westernport, MD, Dr. Small was a 1955 Alumnus of St. Peter’s High School. Throughout his life, he often credited the Sisters of St. Joseph for his academic success while attending West Virginia University, Morgantown and Georgetown School of Medicine. His heartfelt gratitude and respect for the Sisters never waivered.
Upon completing his medical studies, Dr. Small served in the US Army as a Commissioned officer, rank of Captain, from 1962–1964. In 1968, he was granted a license to practice Medicine and Surgery in the State of Wisconsin, where he was primarily associated with Waukesha Memorial Hospital, Waukesha, WI. After 37 years in medicine, he retired in 2005 as an Anesthesiologist.
He enjoyed his retirement in a peaceful country setting in the Southern Tier of New York State. There was never a day he did not look forward to researching countless family history projects and learning new details about his beloved Tri-Towns (Westernport, MD, Piedmont and Keyser, WV). Every year when possible, he took special pleasure returning home to Westernport for the annual St. Peter’s Alumni Banquet. He just loved seeing the many familiar people, talking, laughing and reminiscing.
If you knew “Seammie,” as his dear friend Shawn would call him, you knew a sincere, kind and generous man.
Rest in peace, James T. Small, Jr., those blessed to know and love you, will miss you deeply.
At the request of the deceased, his body was cremated.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice, the Tri-Towns Rescue Squad or the Bereavement Committee of St. Peter’s Church, Westernport, MD.
A memorial Mass at St. Peter’s will be announced at a later date.
