Quentin Hugh Innes Irvine was born on 16 February 1882. He was the son of Francis Hugh Forbes Irvine, 21st of Drum and Mary Agnes Ramsay of Barra and Straloch. He married Irene Dorothy May Burnett, daughter of John Alexander Burnett, 7th of Kemnay and Charlotte Susan Forbes-Gordon, on 2 February 1915. He died on 25 July 1941 at age 59.

He was educated at Radley College, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England. He graduated from Exeter College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1912 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He fought in the First World War. He gained the rank of officer in 1914 in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and Middlesex Regiment.
