12/26/1948 - 2/2/2019 Ann Arbor A much loved husband, father, brother and uncle, Jan Elwin Tripp, 70, Ann Arbor, MI, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2019. He bravely confronted and fought lung and brain cancer. Born December 26, 1948, in Big Rapids, MI, Jan grew up in Baldwin, MI. He received a BS and MS in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan. In 1973 Jan started his engineering career at General Motors Powertrain, Ypsilanti, MI, until his retirement in 2008. Jan never wasted a minute of his life. He had several passions including long distance bicycling, backpacking, hiking, camping and cross country skiing. He was active in his children's sports, hobbies, and interests all through school and into adulthood. He directed his research skills to genealogy and historical events. For several years he held various board positions at the Washtenaw County Historical Society, Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County and the Ann Arbor Bicycling Touring Society. Jan was Professional Engineer, Certified Professional Genealogist, member of Sons of the American Revolution and a member of various organizations. Jan is survived by his wife Marilyn Ammar Tripp of 46 years, daughter Catherine Leigh Tripp, brother Kim Tripp (Susan Bradford), sister Pamela Simmons (Dale), several nieces and nephews, and preceded in death by his son Jon Elwin Tripp in 2011. A private memorial will be held at a later date. We thank the loving staff at Glacier Hills long term care and the compassionate care from St Joseph Mercy Hospice.
