Soviet Cosmonaut. He served as commander of the Soyuz-17 and Soyuz-28 space flights, and backup commander of the Soyuz-12 space mission. A graduate of the Nikolaev Naval Mine and Torpedo Aviation School, he served as a jet bomber pilot in the Pacific Fleet Air Force. He spent a total of 37 days in space, and served as commander of the Salyut-4 orbital space station. He was the author of 16 technical scientific papers and was an honorary member of the Czechoslovakia Academy of Sciences. He was a two time recipient of the Order of Lenin and two Gold Star Medals. In February 1975 he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
