Born November 30. 1909 in Fort Pierre, South Dakota to Richard E and Winnie Church Curran; she was a very proud descendant of John Philpot Curran; the lawyer of Robert Emmet, the Irish patriot.
Irene had a life-long love of Ireland, its history and its literature. She was passionate in her love of literature and had an extensive library. She was often invited to give talks on literature, music, history and art. She herself had a number of poems published. For many years she never missed an opera, a ballet, a play or new gallery shows. Her sense of color was amazing , and her love of antiques, paintings and oriental rugs was enjoyed by everyone who visited her home. She adored travel, especially to her lovely Ireland of course, but also to England, Scotland and Wales, Italy and Mexico.
She was a very proud Democrat and cared deeply for the underdog, the dispossessed and the unfortunate. She was a frequent marcher for civil rights. She developed a keen love of nature and animals which lasted her lifetime.

She had a number of wonderful years working at Haller Lake, Hamlin Park and Cordell Hull schools. She was much loved by many children who kept in touch with her for many years.

In 1934, she married William (Bill) Provine who predeceased her in 1975 and she felt his loss the remainder of her life. They had three children, actress Dorothy, son-in-law film director Robert Day; grandson Rob, rock artist with his band Blackgoat. Daughter Susan Cameron with children Curran Evans also a rock artist with band Blackgoat, his sister Meghan Evans, and teenagers Erin and Patrick Cameron. Daughter, Pat Coldiron with children Denise and Timothy.
Her sister Charlotte (Missie) and brother Richard Curran also predeceased her.

She was a beautiful and loving mother. A light has gone out of our lives. We will miss her and love her always. The world seems a different place now. She passed away on February 22nd.
At her request there was no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to any animal charity, AIDS research, homeless shelters or the charity of your choice.
