Enlisted, June 24, 1916, in Troop K, 1st NY Cavalry Regiment, Brooklyn, NY. The 1st NY Cavalry mustered in for service on the Mexican border, July 6, 1916. The regiment was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas as part of the 6th NY Division (later to be the 27th Division)

The 1st NY Cavalry returned to New York and mustered out of border service March 20, 1917. in little more than a week the unit was called up for service again. This time it was to guard the NY City Aqueducts.

World War 1, he mustered in for service with Troop K, 1st NY Cavalry Regiment. The regiment reorganized for the war as the 104th & 106th Machine Gun battalions, 27th Division. He was assigned to Company A, 106th Machine Gun Battalion.

The 106th MG Battalion was assigned to Camp Wadsworth, SC, for training. After training at Camp Wadsworth, the battalion shipped out for Europe, May 10, 1918, aboard the USS Antigone, from Newport News, VA.

After additional training in France the 27th Division entered the Lines in mid-July 1918. He saw combat in both Belgium and France. The last action for the 27th Division was, October 18, 1918, St. Michael River, vicinity of Catillon, France.

He returned to the States with the 106th MG Battalion, aboard the USS Missouri, from Brest, France. The USS Missouri docked at Hoboken, NJ, March 18, 1919.

He most likely marched in the great "Welcome Home Parade" for the 27th Division, up 5th Avenue, in New York City, March 25, 1919.

As his battalion was making ready for discharge he fell ill and transferred to hospital. He was eventually discharged, April 8, 1919, as a Corporal.
