"My grandfather was Reinhardt W. Boerner. He was a pharmacist before he was a M.D., and he graduated from the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons in the late 1890s. He was about 22 and had to grow a beard because he looked so young. I believe his father was a patrolman on the Milwaukee police force.
Rein and Emma (Graf) Boerner started married life in a flat over a butcher's shop (and I'm sure put up with a lot of doctor/butcher jokes). Dr. Boerner was successful and built a large home on Fond du Lac Avenue, at about 26th street. The house was three stories and the office was in the basement. There was a horse for the doctor, a second for his wife, and a pony for their daughter. There were no more than two servants, at least one of whom lived in the house."
