Dr. Arthur L. Aronson, 77, scientist, professor, veterinarian, musician and beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away Wednesday September 22, 2010 at his home as a result of metastasis of a primary sarcoma.
He grew up in Annandale, MN and was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Thorene, and a brother, James Aronson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Marilyn; daughter Brenda Panno and her husband Larry of Naperville, IL; son, Mark Aronson and his wife Marianne of Midlothian, VA; and daughter, Luann Aronson Fox and her husband Steve, of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Julianne Dehnel, of St. Cloud, MN; and brother, Leighton Aronson, of Leawood, KS.
Arthur graduated from Annandale High School (a classmate with his future wife Marilyn) in 1951, earned DVM (1957) and PhD (1963) degrees from the University of Minnesota, and a Master's degree (1958) from Cornell University.
He accepted a faculty position at Cornell University in 1964 engaging in teaching and research.
In 1980 he joined North Carolina State University and helped establish the NC State Veterinary School, becoming Department Head of Anatomy, Physiological Sciences and Radiology. One of the joys of his life was seeing the growth and strength of the faculty he had the privilege of hiring, and the accomplishments of the student body. Arthur served as program chairman and organized several national symposia: "Recent advances in the therapy of infectious diseases", "Recognition and alleviation of animal pain and distress", and the Society of Toxicology Symposium: "Refinements of animal experiments in toxicology". He chaired a National Academy of Sciences committee to produce the handbook "Recognition and Alleviation of Pain and Distress in Laboratory Animals".
Arthur was elected president of several professional organizations, including: American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, North Carolina Chapter of the Society of Toxicology, and the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology. Arthur served as Editor of the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and was on the Editorial Boards of several journals including Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, Cornell Veterinarian, and the American Journal of Veterinary Research. He was a recipient of numerous awards including the Ruth and Ned Huffman Leadership Award, College of Veterinary Medicine (1989), and the Lloyd E. Davis award from the Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics in recognition of significant contributions in the field of veterinary pharmacology.
Arthur derived much joy and satisfaction from helping others. This was true during his working career and was the major focus of his retirement activities. He was on the board of directors of the Wake County Literacy Council from 1991-2003, and served as the president from 1997-1999. As the director of N.C. State University Women's Club English Conversation classes from 2000-2008, he reached many people from around the world. One of his favorite outreaches was the tutoring/mentoring program through the Communities In Schools. He was extremely active in this program and was recently recognized for his fifteen years of service with "The Most Valuable CIS Tutor/Mentor Award" for "The Most Outstanding Dedication and Service by a Volunteer in the History of the Communities in Schools of Wake County."
He cherished his friendships through volunteer activities, his church family, and by celebrating his Swedish and Norwegian heritage with the Friends of Scandinavia. Both he and Marilyn enjoyed their association with this group for many years and he served as president from 2007-2008.
Arthur had a deep love for his family and especially for his six grandchildren: Ariana and Garrett Panno, Matthew and Julia Aronson, and Noah and Luke Fox. During the summers the grandchildren would each have an individual week and the activities included model and rocket building, music making, reading, gardening, wood working, cooking, swimming and bicycling. Marvelous memories!
The family would like to acknowledge the loving support of our dear friends Joma and Nadine, our Hospice nurse Jeannie Brown and our wonderful home health care providers Lori and Marita. Our church family, relatives and friends from around the country have uplifted us all with their prayers and constant reminders of their love. We are in supreme gratitude.
A memorial service will be held on Monday September 27, 2010 at 2:00pm at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastors Royall Yount and Lawrence Holmes officiating. Friends are invited for a short reception immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to contribute to a memorial fund in his name at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2723 Clark Avenue Raleigh, NC 27607 or to The Communities in Schools Arthur L. Aronson Scholarship Fund. Donations can be mailed in his honor to Communities of Wake County, 971 Harp Street, Raleigh, NC 27604.
A memorial service will be held for Arthur in Minnesota at a later date. Details about the time and place will be forthcoming.

What have you been doing since graduation? Please include job/s, education, volunteer activities, political work, family, interesting things you do in your spare time:
Following graduation I entered a graduate program in pharmacology at Cornell University (MS 1959). I returned to the U of M and earned a Ph.D. in pharmacology with Paul Hammond in 1963. Joined the faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in 1964 and remained there until 1980. The new CVM in North Carolina proved irresistible; served as a department head until retirement in 1999.
What is most important to you now? (work, academics, family, etc.) Grandchildren visits. gardening, photography and volunteer activities keep me occupied. I mentor middle school and high school students within the communities in Schools Program and serve as coordinator for "English Conversation Classes" a program that began 46 years ago for spouses of visiting faculty, scholars and graduate students from foreign countries.
