Enlisted, June 4, 1917, in Troop C, Squadron A Cavalry, New York City. Squadron A reorganized for the World War as the 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. He was assigned to Company C. The Battalion was assigned to Camp Wadsworth, SC, for training. On February 2, 1918 he was promoted to First Sergeant of Company C.


After training at Camp Wadsworth the battalion shipped out for Europe, May 18, 1918, aboard the USS Calomares, from Newport News, VA. On May 30, 1918 the battalion docked at St Nazaire, France.


In July 1918 he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry and assigned to Company A, 356th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division. He took part in the engagements in Flanders and Meuse-Argonne and wounded by shell fire, lower right leg, November 10, 1918.
