Nanny S. Hodge was born Nancy Susan Smith. She married Rev. Robert Archibald Hodge on 19 July 1865 in Bastrop County, Texas.

They had ten children together: William Ethel, John Robert, George Newell, Edwin Fields, Minnie Letitia, Donald Reed, Mary Eulena "Lena," Neeley Burney, Burney, and Addie Alice.

1880 United States Census, San Saba, Texas 413D: Nanny S. HODGE Household; Female; Other Information: Birth Year <1844>; Birthplace Alabama; Age 36; Occupation Keeping House; Marital Status M; Race White; Head of Household Robt. A. HODGE; Relation Wife; Father's Birthplace Mississippi; Mother's Birthplace Mississippi.

Following Nanny's death, her husband, the Rev. R.A. Hodge, did not remarry.

For many years family tradition was that she was buried at the San Saba cemetery, or possibly at Cherokee, but that years ago the Colorado River flooded and washed away her grave. About 1940, Minnie Letitia Hodge Dameron and two of her brothers journeyed to San Saba to look for the grave but never found it. In 1984, Kyle Dameron drove to San Saba to determine for himself if Nanny Hodge's grave was truly lost. He spoke to residents who indicated that indeed there had been a flood many years ago, but it had not reached any of the cemeteries, which were all on high ground. He next checked at a local funeral home, where the owner brought out an index of all tombstone inscriptions in the county. There in the index was listed Nancy Susan Hodge, as well as two of her children, all buried at Feazle Cemetery.

Feazle Cemetery is a neat, well-kept little country cemetery named for an early pioneer family in the area. It is located about five or six miles south of highway 190 between San Saba and Richland Springs, on Cottonwood Creek Road. Kyle found the little cemetery to be fenced and well cared for, and Nancy's grave as well as those of two of her children, Burney and Addie Alice, are all marked by marble tombstones.

My (Linda L. McCallister at anicehippylady @ aol dot com) great grandfather on my mother's side of the family was Nannie and Robert Archibald's oldest son, William Ethel. I have been searching for years for information on Nancy Susan "Nannie" Smith Hodge and her husband Reverend Robert Archibald Hodge. I would appreciate hearing from you by email if you have any knowledge of this couple ... )
