William Augustus Henegar was born between 1837-1841 to Solomon and Mary Henegar in Smyth County, Virginia. On 23 Jan 1867 in Marion, Virginia he married Mary Jane Lewis (See Marriage Record below for parents and marriage info). On the various records he alternates his name between William & Augustus. His nickname was Gus.

William A. Henigar, a resident of Smyth County, VA, enlisted in the Civil War on the side of the Confederate States of America. As a private he was mustered with Company E of the 50th Regiment of the Virginia Infantry. He stood 6'2" tall with light hair, a fair complexion and gray eyes. On 2 Mar 1865 William was taken prisoner by the Union troops and imprisoned at Waynesboro, VA. On 9 Mar 1865 he was moved to Harper's Ferry, WV and confined. A few days later on 12 Mar 1865 he was moved again and held prisoner at Fort Delaware. Shortly after the end of the Civil War, at Fort Delaware on 20 Jun 1865 William took the Oath Allegiance to the United States of America and was released (See Civil War Record below).
