Saint-Étienne Cathedral had several paintings and frescoes before its demolition. Currently, St. John's Cathedral preserves eight paintings which happen to be copies made in the 19th century of old painted frescoes from the 15th century , which adorned the tombs in the atrium of the old St. Stephen's Cathedral . These paintings represent Étienne de Bourgogne, Étienne de Vienne , Gaucher III, Guillaume le Grand , Gérard count of Vienne and Mâcon , Renaud I , Renaud III andOtto I of Burgundy .
The graves
In the summer of 1674 the tombs were delicately transferred to Saint-Jean.
The counts of Burgundy had a space reserved for them in the cemetery adjacent to the cathedral, the space known as the cemetery of the counts. This space extended at the bottom of the nave between the rood screen and the wall of the bell tower, and accommodated at least eight counts with simple tombs, where only one of them included a recumbent figure. The exhumation of the remains took place on the 28th and June 29 and 3 and August 4, 1674, as evidenced by a thorough report.
