Mrs. Rosana G. Phalen, Long Postmistress at Rossie, dies of Burns
Mrs. Rosana Gillin Phalen, a former school teacher, who for many eyars operated a general store and post office at Rossie was burned to death in her home at Rossie Monday evening. Her clothes became ignited, apparently from a two burner electric hot place, which had been placed near her to heat up the room. She was 86 years of age.

Dr. Roland E. Stacy, Ogdensburg, coroner, conducted an inquest at the home and gave a verdict of accidental death.

It was reported that Mrs. Phalen had been seated in the parlor and the hot plate was placed near her to give added warmth to the room. James Mullin, her cousin, who was in the store across the street, heard screams coming from the parlor, and he rushed in to see Mrs. Phalen lying across the burner, her clothing aflame. She died a few moments later.

Dr. Kimball of Hammond was summonded, but arrived to late to give assistance.

Mrs. Phalen was born in Brooklyn May 23, 1860, the daughter of Daniel and Grace Mullin Gillan. She came to Rossie with her family when she was a child. She attended Rossie schools and Wesleyan Seminary in Gouverneur.

Following her graduation she taught school for 15 years at Rossie. She retired to become postmaster of the Rossie post office, a post she held for 39 years.

Mrs. Phalen was married to James Phalen in 1897. He operated a blacksmith shop at Rossie. He died in 1902.

Mrs. Phalen is survived by seven cousins, James Mullin, rossie; William Mullin, Gouverneur; Daniel Mullin, Macomb; Mrs. Lena Sigourney, Rossie, and John and Adam Turnbull, both of Hammond.

Funeral services were held this morning from the home and from St. Patrick's Catholic church, Rossie. Rev. Joseph Stickelmyer, pastor, celebrated the requiem mass. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Rossie.
