Enlisted, December 24, 1900, in Troop C Cavalry, NYNG, at the North Portland Amory, Brooklyn, NY. Served in the ranks and promoted to Sergeant, February 1, 1906. He was appointed, 2nd Lieutenant, Cavalry, May 6, 1910, and assigned to Troop 8, Squadron C Cavalry.


On December 28, 1911, Squadron C reorganized into the 1st NY Cavalry Regiment, NYNG. He was promoted Captain November 24, 1915, and assigned as commander of Troop L.


The 1st NY Cavalry was called for service on the Mexican border and mustered in, June 22, 1916. The regiment was assigned to Camp McAllen. TX, as part of the 6th NY Division ( later to be the 27th Division ). He returned to New York with his Troop ad mustered out of border service, March 22, 1917.
