Born Julia Harpmann (with two Ns) in Memphis, TN, Miss Harpman worked in the newspaper industry in Knoxville, TN before moving to New York City in 1920. She became one of the New York Daily News' first female journalists and the paper's lead crime reporter. Eventually, she would become the assistant editor on the city desk at the Daily News. She covered such famous cases as the Lindbergh baby kidnapping (1932) and Gertrude Ederle's swimming of the English Channel in 1926.
