John Stewart was the son of Samuel and Lydia Harris Stewart. He married Hannah Boone on February 14, 1865 in Rowan County, North Carolina. He was a friend of Hannah's brother, Daniel Boone, and was apparently killed by Shawnees while on an hunting trip in the winter of 1769-1770. His body was found in 1775 in a hollow log near the Rockcastle River on the Boone Trace.
