Leo P. Cannon Electrocuted
Instantly killed while working on pole at Rome Friday, Body brought to Gouverneur
Word was received here Friday evening of the sudden and accidental death of Leo P. Cannon of this village which occurred in the Rome hospital Friday evening following contact with electrical wires while working in that city. mr. Cannon was employed by the NOrthern Utilities Company of Watertown. He was at work on a pole with a strap around his body when the loose end of a live wire came in contact with his leg. He exclaimed, "Boys, the juice has got me" and fell, supported by the strap. Death was amost instantaneous. He was taken to the hospital in Rome, but efforts to resuscitate him were futile. He died about seven o'clock.
Mr. Cannon was 27 years of age, and was born in this village September 11, 1897, the son of Patrick and Mary E. Cannon. He always resided here until a few months ago, when he accepted a position with the Utilities COmpany. He had been employed by the American Express Company as a driver and at the plant of the Oswegatchie Paper Company and also as a lineman for the St. Lawrence Utilities, Inc in this village before leaving for Rome.
Mr. Cannon is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary E. Cannon of this village, 3 sisters, Mrs. Burt Allen, Gouverneur, and Misses Kathlene and Grace Cannon of Watertown; also two brothers, James and Robert Cannon.
The remains were brought to his village Saturday evening for interment. Funeral services were held Monday morning at ten o'clock from teh St. James Catholic church. Rev. M. F. Gallivan, pastor of the church officiated at the requiem mass and interment was made in Riverside cemetery.
