Singer. An American singer, born Katherine Elaine Anderson to Robert Timothy Calvin "T.C. " Anderson and Florence Smith Anderson. She was an original member and co-founder of the girl group, The Marvelettes who was a background singer throughout her tenure in The Marvelettes. At age seventeen, she was drafted as a backup singer for her friends Gladys Horton and Georgia Dobbins for the Inkster High School talent show, at the time they called themselves "The Casinyets." Upon entering the talent show in 1961, the name had been changed to "The Marvels." Their teacher, Shirley Sharpley, who knew Berry Gordy's driver and bodyguard, Jon O'Den, helped them to land an audition with Motown Records. The group signed with Motown in 1961, they were then renamed "The Marvelettes." The Marvelettes were the first successful act of Motown Records after The Miracles and its first significantly successful female group after the release of their 1961 number-one single, "Please Mr. Postman," the song topped the charts for 23 weeks, one of the first number-one singles recorded by an all-female vocal group, and the first by a Motown recording act. The Marvelettes was the first Motown act to have a chart-topper on the Billboard Hot 100. Their hits included: "Twistin' Postman," "Beechwood 4-5789," "Playboy," "Too Many Fish in the Sea," "Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead," "Don't Mess With Bill," "The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game" and many others. "Please Mr. Postman" and "Don't Mess With Bill" each received million-selling Gold certifications by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The Marvelettes disbanded in the early 1970s and she left the business altogether. Of all the original Marvelettes, she was the most active. She had put together a new group of Marvelettes who continued to perform without her due to her health. In 1995, The Marvelettes won a Pioneer Award at the R&B Foundation Awards. In 2004, they were inducted to the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. In 2011, Please Mr. Postman was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame by The Recording Academy. The Marvelettes were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 and again in 2015.
