In 1895, Constable Maddox was charged with killing Frank Rippen in a Hell's Half Acre bordello while trying to arrest him. Rippen had shot and seriously wounded Frank Thomas over a woman, Minnie Redding. There is no known outcome of the trial, but Maddox, Redding, and Thomas were all charged.

In 1900, while living at the Triangle Building at Ninth and Houston Streets in Downtown Fort Worth, he died of pneumonia. There was a funeral, but there is no known burial site. He never married.
