In 1976, she won the Rendsburg-Eckernförde constituency in the federal election, becoming the youngest member of the German Bundestag. From 1988 to 1993, she served as Finance Minister, and from 1993 to 2005, she served as Prime Minister of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. From 2005 to 2008, she was chairwoman of UNICEF Germany.
She was the first woman to be regularly elected to office at the head of a German state government and is an honorary citizen of Schleswig-Holstein.
Simonis passed away in Kiel in July 2023, a few days following her 80th birthday, following a prolonged illness.
