October 4, 1917 in the Lansing State Journal, it was reported he had returned from Jackson where he had been recuperating from a paralytic stroke. Cassius was accompanied by his sister Mrs. Vida Stewart of Glen Ridge, New Jersey. His brother L Bartholf took him home with him and he spent the winter there until he returned home in March where he committed suicide. He had lived alone since the death of his mother.
