Frederick Walter Hilbig passed away peacefully on May 6, 2008, after a short illness.
He was born July 24, 1910 in Zwickau, Saxony, Germany to Ernst Otto Hilbig and Anna Marie Reinhold Hilbig. Orphaned at 17, he and his younger brother Karl immigrated to America one year later, and became U.S. Citizens. Served in Patton's 3rd Army as a Combat Engineer during World War II, participating in the landing at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Received a number of service commendations, including a Purple Heart. Afterwards served in the Army Reserves as a Master Sergeant. Married Hazel Manwaring, June 10, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple. She passed away April 11, 1990. Married Blanche (Bonnie) Lessig, April 27, 1991. Walter loved genealogy and worked as an Accredited Genealogist for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 30 years. Completed both his BA and MA degrees from the University of Utah while working full-time. After retirement, served multiple church service missions in record extraction and family history. Active member of the LDS Church.
Survived by his wife, Bonnie; step-son, Bruce Lessig (Bobbi); son, David M. Hilbig (Barbara); five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel, parents and siblings.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the Olympus Fourth Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 2700 East 4500 South in Holladay, Utah. Friends may call at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary in Sandy, Utah located at 1950 East 10600 South on Friday, May 16, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 PM and Saturday at the Olympus 4th Ward from 9:45-10:45 PM.
Interment in Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery with Military Honors.
