Civil War veteran

Sergeant, Co. A, 45th Massachusetts Infantry (Sep. 1862 to Jan. 1863)

The son of George E. and Louisa R. (Gore) Woodman, he married Anna J. Call at West Roxbury, MA on June 5, 1861. They were parents of four children, including George F., born in 1862; Francis C., born in 1864; Anna C., born in 1867; and Paul G., born in 1875 and died in 1880.

 

George enlisted as a Sergeant in Co. A of the 45th Massachusetts Infantry on Sep. 25, 1862 and served with that regiment in eastern North Carolina until he received a promotion as an officer with the 1st North Carolina Colored Volunteers in January 1863. This regiment, which was formed in New Bern, NC, was commanded by Col. James C. Beecher, brother of author Harriet Beecher Stowe. George resigned his commission on June 15, 1863 and returned to Boston.


George was widowed on May 18, 1880. He survived his wife Anna by four years when he died at Massachusetts General Hospital due to a "terminal abscess."



Death notice:

Mr. George F. Woodman, for many years a merchant in this city in the woolen trade, died on Sunday [Nov. 2, 1884]. Mr. Woodman was an officer in the Union army during the war of the Rebellion.
