Russian Cosmonaut. He served as the flight engineer on the Soyuz 22 (1976) and Soyuz T-2 (1980). After his father was killed in World War II in 1944 and his mother passed away in 1949 he was raised by his maternal grandparents. He graduated from a rural school where he made good grades. He was admitted to Asimov Industrial College. After graduating he went on to attend the Mytishchi Engineering College, where he graduated from in 1953. He then attended the 10th Military Aviation School for Primary Pilot Training. He was accepted to the cosmonaut corps as a civilian cosmonaut in 1973. He made his first flight into space onboard Soyuz 22 on September 15, 1976 where he and fellow cosmonaut Valery Bykovsky spent a week taking photographs of various locations. They returned to earth on September 23, 1976. .On June 5, 1980, he returned to space onboard Soyuz T-2 and returned to Earth on June 9, 1980. In total, he spent 11 days 20 hours and 11 minutes in space. He retired from the cosmonaut program in 1988. For his service, he received numerous awards. He was 89 when he passed away.
