Duane started his career as a Water Carrier at the Steel Mill, the National Tube Co. He then began clerking at the office, then transferred to the downtown home office in McKeesport. He worked there for 50 years and retired when it was the Carnegie Illinois Steel Co. Every day he brought two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch. He retired about 1935 with a small pension, and then began working for the Republican party, who sent him to Pennsylvnia State. He did that for about 12 years and stopped working around age 75.
Duane loved music. While at National Tube he directed the choir at the office. He liked to sing (baritone) and played the ukelele. He could often be found humming a tune or singing with the radio.
