After Vernon's parents tragically died in a car accident when he was just four years old, he and his two sisters were raised by their paternal grandparents. His grandfather Joseph S. Baker, a Union Pacific railroad brakeman worker in Cheyenne, taught Vernon to hunt in order to feed the family and became "the most influential figure in Vernon's life." Joseph died of cancer in December 1939.
