JUDGE LEE DEAD
-----------------------
Died in City This Morning at Age of 72 Years; Came to Cheyenne with Union Pacific Railroad Nearly 40 Years Ago A Western Character.
-----------------------
After a long life into which was crowded more of excitement and thrilling incidents than fall to the lot of the average man, Judge William F. Lee passed away this morning at the Cheyenne Private hospital at the age of 72 years from complication of heart and stomach troubles. No arrangements have as yet been made for the funeral, which will probably be in charge of the Knights of Pythias, Mr. Lee being a member of the local lodge.
Mr. Lee was born in East St. Louis in 1834 and came west in 1858, establishing ranches at Kearney and Julesburg, Neb., and Ft. Laramie in Wyoming. Mr. Lee through long association with the Indians became an excellent linguist and for many years acted as interpreter between the government troops and the Redskins and participated in many exciting Indian fights along the valley of the North Platte and the surrounding country, distinguishing himself on several occasions.
In 1867 Mr. Lee moved to Cheyenne, coming here with the Union Pacific and has resided here ever since, taking an active part in the municipal affairs of the city in the pioneer days. In 1884 he was elected as county coroner, serving two years and subsequently served five terms as justice of the peace in 1886, 1888, 1889, 1892 and 1896.
Mr. Lee is survived by a widow, who is almost prostrated over the death of her husband; and by one son, Geo. Lee, for many years city librarian at Denver, and four daughters, three by a former wife, and one, Mrs. W. H. Butler of Philadelphia, by the present wife. George Lee arrived from Denver this morning to attend the funeral of his father.
