Enlisted, July 26, 1917, in Troop B, Squadron A Cavalry, New York City. Squadron A Cavalry reorganized for World War, as the 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division, he was assigned to Company A. After training at Camp Wadsworth, SC, the 105th Machine Gun Battalion deployed to Europe, on May 18, 1918, aboard the USS Calomare, from Newport News, VA. He saw combat in both Belgium & France. Wounded in action ( by rifle fire ), Sept. 27, 1918, at the Hindenburg Line and Awarded the Silver Star, order # SO 86, 27th Division, for his actions. He returned to his company from the hospital, November 10, 1918.

Returned to the States, March 6, 1919, aboard the USS Leviathan, docking at Hoboken. He marched in the great " Welcome Home Parade " for the 27th Division, up 5th Avenue, in New York City, on March 25, 1919. Discharged from the service, April 1, 1919, at Camp Upton, NY.

Silver Star, order # S.O. 86, 27th Division, " For leadership. courage and determination as squad leader and in aiding in the recue of two men from a burning tank during operations against the Hindenburg Line, September 27, 1918 ". ( SGT Reider Waaler, received the Medal of Honor for his part in this action )
