Denzil BASIL GOODNIGHT Beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Born April 9, 1924 in Wasola, Missouri and passed away September 10, 2008 in Lancaster, California. A longtime resident of Pacoima, Denzil "Denny" was a decorated WWII veteran, retired Lockheed employee, avid sportsman, Dodger fan, and above all, devoted husband and father. Denny grew up on a dairy farm in southwest Missouri, the oldest of nine children of Charley and Rae Goodnight. He graduated from Ava High School in 1942 and served in the Army across Europe before being injured in Germany, late 1944. While stationed in San Francisco after the war, he met his future wife, Irma. They were married in 1948 and raised four boys. He worked over 30 years as a master machinist and leadman, spending many years on the Lockheed "Skunk Works" team, where he earned several commendations, before retiring in 1986. He also was a longtime member and past president of the North Hollywood Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed fishing/camping with his family and many good friends. He loved to take long walks with his dog, Silver. Denny was very devoted to his loving wife, "Peaches", of more than 60 years, her parents, Peter and Jeanette, his children and later, his grandchildren. Both Denzil and Irma were crushed by the losses of their two sons in 1970, Peter Ray (in Vietnam) and Philip Lee (in a car accident), but they fought hard to overcome their grief, dedicating their lives to each other and their family. After Denny became ill, he again demonstrated his lifelong courage and simple dignity in the face of death. He thought only of his family and not of himself, often caring for those around him. In addition to his wife, Irma, Denzil is survived by his brother, Wayne Goodnight; and sisters, Kathleen Nash, Naida Haden, and Faith Haskins (all of Missouri); sister-in-law, Mary Goodnight (of Kennewick, Washington); sons, Michael and Nathan Goodnight, their wives, Elaine and Beverly; grandchildren, Ryan and Sonia Goodnight, Philip and Nancy Goodnight, Jennifer, Stacey and Melissa Rae Goodnight; and great-grandchildren, Michael, Mariah, Ahlena, Savannah Rae and Rebecca. A memorial service was held on Monday at the San Fernando Mission Chapel, Mission Hills, with interment following. Instead of flowers, donations in memory of Denzil may be made to t he American Cancer Society. Directors 818-361-7387
