Miss Annie Leggott

Annie Leggott was born on a farm northwest of Clifton Feb. 28, 1868, and died at Clifton, Oct. 5, 1916.

She was the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Leggott, who moved here from Plainfield some time in the '60s. As a child Annie attended the Leggottville school, and made herself useful about the home.

In 1890 her father retired from farming and Annie accompanied her parent to Clifton where Mr. Leggott had purchased a home. Two years later he died, and Annie and her mother were left to maintain the home.

In 1894 Annie took her brother James' infant son, who had been left motherless at birth, and cared for him as her own. Jamie had his home with his Aunt Annie and his grandmother for eleven years, when his grandmother died and the home was broken up. During those years Annie gave him the care and love of a mother, and it was with regret that she relinquished him to his father and sisters.

After the death of her mother, Annie disposed of her home and household effects and lived alternately with her brothers James and George and her sister Harriet.

For many years her health had been poor, and for the past seven years she had been under the care of a physician. Her's was a spirit not willing to yield to pain and discomfort, her fortitude having been acquired through many years of caring for others who were helpless. She often said she did not want to become a burden to others, and did for herself until through sheer physical weakness, she could do no more. She might have relinquished herself to the condition of a petulant invalid, but did not. She was cheerful, considerate, and brave to the end.

Her only surviving near relatives, of a one time large family, are her brother, James Leggott, and her sister, Mrs. Geo. Brock, with whom she was making her home at the time of her death.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Congregational church conducted by the Rev. T. J. M. Crapp, assisted by the Rev. W. B. Milne. Interment was made in Chebanse.
