Melissa was the only child of Cornelius and Mary H. (Ganantz) McKerlie. She was the third Melissa McKerlie, having been named for her Aunt Melissa McKerlie and her father's Aunt Melissa McKerlie. Jewelry has been handed down from each Melissa in the family and is now in possession of the fourth Melissa descendant.
