Samuel was born on October 22nd, 1812 in Chanceford Township, Pennsylvania, and died at the age of 75 years old, on November 28th, 1887 in Spring Grove, Jackson Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

His parents were Jacob Oberlander(1765-1816) and Susanna Baugher(1773-1814), both were born and died in Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

Samuel was 18 months old when his mother died at the young age of 41, shortly after giving birth to his brother Frederick on the day of April 21st, 1814. His father died two years later in 1816, leaving his older brother Michael to raise nine younger siblings on the Oberlander Farm, with young Samuel only abt four years old.

He was a descendant of Reverend John George Baugher (Bager) born in Germany on March 19th, 1725, who was a preacher and founder of several churches in the York-Adams County area. He sailed from Rotterdam, by way of Plymouth, on the ship Bawley. The Rev. took the oath of allegiance at Philadelphia, on Octorber 23, 1752, and he pastored in a Log church along Carlisle Pike, near Hanover, Pennsylvania. Reverend Bager and his wife Elizabeth Schwabs (born 1728 in Germany, death in Pigeon Hills, PA), first born son was Samuel's Grandfather, named John George "William" Baugher (1750-1798), and he married Catherine Kepner (1753-1824). Samuel's paternal Grandparents were Peter Oberlander(1745-1780) and Catherine Niepp(1749-1777).

At age 22, Samuel married Eliza Menges (b.1812-d.1895) in the year of 1834 in Abbottstown, Pennsylvania. His wife was born in Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania, and the daughter of Sabina Ziegler and Peter Menges.

Samuel and Eliza's Children were Susan Jane, Sarah Ann, Samuel Frederick, Lamanda(1839-1866), Cyrus, Peter, Elizabeth(1846-1932), Mary Ann. They raised their children in Jackson Township, Spring Forge, Pennsylvania.

Samuel's occupation was listed as a farmer in the Pigeon Hills, and a Mason when 68 years old in Jackson Township, Spring Grove area.
