BY MABEL BENNEY
The hearts of many neighbors, friends and townspeople were saddened this morning to hear of the death of Prof. E. W. Chaffee in the early morning hours. While not a native of Valparaiso, he had spent forty-four years here and been identified with many of the activities of the town as well as of the university, with which he was associated for fifty years.
In 1940 he received the honorary title of Professor of Music Emeritus for his long years of service. Earlier they had honored him with the honorary degree, Doctor of Music. He was head of the music department for more than 20 years.
In civic life he was a member of the Methodist church and a faithful attendant at its services. He was also active in the Masonic order and in the Kiwanis and Mathesis Clubs.
Born in Illinois
Edwin Walter Chaffee was born April 12 at Paw Paw, Ill. He began the study of music in early boyhood. Later, in Chicago, he studied under such noted teachers as Fredrick Grant Gleason, W. S. Mathews, Emil Lubling, and William Sherwood. In 1889 he went to the Sterns Conservatory in Berlin, Germany, and studied under Heinrich Ehrlich, Ludwig Bussler, and Heinrich Urban, the latter a teacher of Paderewski and Josef Hoffman. His last year in Germany, Mr. Chaffee served as assistant professor at the conservatory in Berlin.
Returning to Chicago, he became the head of the theory department of the Gottschalk Lyric School. In 1898 he became part time teacher at Valparaiso University and in 1901 moved to this city which has since been his home.
In 1896, November 18, he had married Nellie Gilmore of Compton, Ill. To this union were born a son, who died in infancy, and two daughters, Mildred (Mr. Beatty Julien) and Miss Margery Chaffee. He leaves also one granddaughter, Laura Jean Julien; a brother, Elmer Chaffee, of Boise, Idaho, and a son-in-law, Beatty Julien. Mrs. Chaffee died in 1944.
Funeral services will be held at the Stinchfield Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Saturday, conducted by Rev. Harvey J. Keiser, assisted by Rev. E. W. Strecker. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday afternoon and evening and on Saturday until the time of the service.
Tribute was paid the late Dr. Chaffee this morning at Valparaiso University where special services were conducted by Dr. O. P. Kretzmann, President.
